Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape dominate mileage recorded by Tracker during 2020 and 2021. The hard lockdown in April 2020 and the more restrictive lockdowns in December / January and then in July 2021 are noticeable in terms of less mileage travelled.
The graph above demonstrates the month-on-month percentage changes in 2021 moving in sympathy with the different lockdown levels. Mileage increased during lower lockdown levels and markedly decreased during higher lockdown levels (January, June and July).
The graph on the left compares mileage just prior to the hard lockdown in 2020, using February as the last full month before the lockdown started and May 2020 when South Africa was in Lockdown Level 4. The severe impact of the lockdown is evident in all Provinces, but especially those with greater economic activity.
The impact of Lockdown Level 4 in 2021 was not as severe. The months used for comparison are May 2021, the month before the third wave accelerated, and July 2021, when Gauteng was placed in Lockdown Level 4. Notably, most Provinces were not affected much, with seven out of nine Provinces achieving 90% and more of mileages seen in May. Gauteng was affected by both unrest and Lockdown Level 4, and mileage achieved dropped to 87.19%. Although KwaZulu-Natal was not placed under Lockdown Level 4, the severity of its unrest saw mileage activity drop to 84.76%.
These mileage decreases are slightly more than the decreases seen in Signio volumes.
